Steps to reproduce:

1. Install firefox portable
2. start with a fresh profile
3. change setting browser.link.open_newwindow to 1
4. Open page https://hazor.iki.fi/temp/iframe-bug/
5. try "Watch on Youtube" -link on embedded youtube-video
6. youtube video opens in the same tab
7. restart Firefox
8. try again the same link on the previous page. Youtube video tries to open the link inside the frame and not in the same tab
9. Same happens to other links on a 3rd party iframe. 1st party iframe (testlink) with links works fine

If I start firefox in troubleshooting mode everything works fine.

I have experienced this bug now for a few weeks. First I thought it was a problem with my addons, but now I managed to reproduce it without installing any addons.

I already thought that I had fixed this problem with a clean profile which worked for a few days, but then it suddenly broke again. I happened to install web developer toolbar just before this bug reappeared. Disabling all addons does not help.

This appears to be caused by the Fission rollout. I believe that it is caused due to an oversight with this particular pref configuration.

It appears that we incorrectly redirect the load to the current BrowserChild's docshell when loading with OPEN_CURRENTWINDOW in https://searchfox.org/mozilla-central/rev/6a7c3a1eda4ebb8f9c13779dbbf5eff15bacf8ed/dom/ipc/BrowserChild.cpp#833-846, even when this BrowserChild corresponds to a remote subframe.

Fortunately, the fix for this should be fairly simple. We can change the code here (https://searchfox.org/mozilla-central/rev/6a7c3a1eda4ebb8f9c13779dbbf5eff15bacf8ed/dom/ipc/BrowserChild.cpp#843) to call GetBrowsingContext()->Top() to always return the toplevel document rather than returning the current frame.

Looks like the links in iframes now work as they should in Firefox 96.0.2. However one bug remains: using CTRL+click does not open links in a new background tab but in the current tab.

Odd, I can still reproduce the bug as described in comment 0, and the code referenced in comment #3 hasn't changed in a material way, AFAICT.

However one bug remains: using CTRL+click does not open links in a new background tab but in the current tab.

But I cannot reproduce this (admittedly with cmd-click on macOS). Are you seeing this with the same steps as in comment 0? It may be worth filing a separate bug.

Quite odd. My test page works flawlessly for me on firefox 96.0.2. Also ctrl+left click works on this page:

scroll down until you see text Iltasanomat on the right column of the page. After that there are several links embedded in iframe. Normal left click
works on those links fine, but ctrl+left click does not.

Thanks for the added detail. This is because the website has some javascript that calls event.preventDefault() (stopping us opening the link) and then "manually" calls window.open, passing _blank to open a new tab. This is an old bug and tracked in bug 1081542. It's not trivial to fix because the window.open call has no reference to the event that triggered it, and the associated middle-click or keyboard modifiers.

I'm still not sure why the situation from comment 0 works for you now though - if you open about:support, in the top table, what text is shown next to "Fission windows"?

it says: 0/1 Disabled by default

I haven't touched any fission related preferences. Now I tried to turn fission.autostart to true. After that my test page stops working :-\

Seems like I have to keep fission disabled, because this bug is very very annoying.
