Steps to reproduce:
I have a large (11MB) local htm-file (not: html) which is an archive for my old agenda.
Since version 95 I can open the file (it takes a long time), but then to search a keyword with CTRL+F the whole firefox freezes, doesn't show the search tab, and I have to kill the whole app in task manager.
Actual results:
Opening the same file in Chrome doesn't take long and I am able to search through the whole file.
Expected results:
as before: open and search without freezing

These might be two separate issues. Since the Firefox takes a long time to open the file and Chrome doesn't, DOM: HTML Parser seems like a good place to put this for now.

Does the file declare its character encoding using meta?
Is there any chance you could produce a test file with similar markup but privacy-sensitive text replaced with some lorem ipsum?
(The ctrl-f thing is a different issue from the initial load time and is potentially more interesting, since Chrome's ctrl-f mechanism is heavier than ours.)

Having a lot of elements with special position might have something to do with ctrl-f performance. However, they don't affect HTML parser performance.
Without any idea of what the markup structure looks like, this isn't actionable, unfortunately. The HTML spec itself is in the size category that you describe, and it works OK, so the actual markup is relevant to figuring out what's wrong here.
The parser performance would likely be improved by replacing the line <head> with <head><meta charset=utf-8>. Currently, we buffer up to 4 MB for encoding detection for local files (on the assumption that it's very uncommon for HTML files to be anywhere near that large).

Thanks, you were right: the loading is now much faster.
But the "Search in page" function remains as described: firefox freezes, not only the tab, but the whole app.
After about 5 minutes the search function works normal again.
And firefox works again, and other tabs in firework too.

after including the meta tag (utf-8) the file opens quite quickly.
so thanks for that.
but searching for an expression with "search in page" or CTRL+F freezes the browser for 6 minutes.
after this time the search function works normally.
why does firefox need so much time for the search function to work?

I copied and pasted from comment 7 until I had 15 MB of HTML, and ctrl-f works instantaneously for me.
This isn't actionable without a concrete file that demonstrates the problem.

well, my original file of 11MB is very private.
therefore i won't send it to an anonymous receiver.
but I can assure you that it takes 6 minutes for the search bar to display correctly (for the first 6 minutes it looks very unfinished, only the upper part of its shape is visible at the bottom of the browser window).
when all data are loaded, this bar changes to the normal format, is located fully at the bottom of the window and I can search for any expression.
this was not the case in former versions of firefox - I generated the file in summer 2019 and use it at least once a month to have a special look in this archive file (unfortunately one can't send here a screenshot).

Sorry, I misread your previous comment.
I understand that you won't send the original file and I'm not asking you to. However, without a similarly-structured shareable file that you can reproduce the problem with, this bug isn't actionable, unfortunately. (I also understand if you don't want to take the time to create a similarly-structured test case that reproduces the problem.)

thanks for your understanding - to make a masked file of 11 MB seems to me not very useful.
But I have made a comparison between
Firefox 95.0.1
Google Chrome 96.0.4664.110
Opera 82.0.4227.33
(Safari is not available anymore for windows)
I measured the time lap between the fully loaded file/start searching an expression and the time the first result shows up on the screen:
Opera: 0'04"
Chrome: 0'10"
Firefox: 7'09"
My system: Windows 11 Pro
RAM: 16.0 GB
processor: i7 Intel
so it's definitely a problem of Firefox 95 - because before this version everything worked as fast as all the other browsers.

Graycom if providing a test-case is not possible, perhaps you can run mozregression to see which change caused it? Or a profile to see where time is being spent? That could help figure out what caused it and thus how to fix it so that we can come up with a test-case ourselves :)

So it seems you have accessibility turned on for some reason, do you use a screen reader or something like that? Not that it should take that long anyways, but if it's unexpected to have it turned on then we need to dig into why. Can you:
- Go to
about:support, and attach the contents here (before doing the next step). - Go to
about:config, look foraccessibility.force_disabled, and set it to1. Maybe restart Firefox, just to be double-sure. - Confirm that hopefully it doesn't take that long anymore :-)

Which if I understand correctly means that accessibility was enabled by UIAUTOMATION. I have no idea what UIAUTOMATION.dll means or what it does. Jamie, do you know?

UI Automation is a Windows accessibility framework. We try to detect the executable that triggered this framework, but sometimes it isn't possible. Unfortunately, that means we don't know what on the user's system is using accessibility services.
Some Windows components can trigger accessibility services; e.g. touch screen stuff. Again, we've tried to prevent unwanted triggering like this, but there are some cases we don't know enough about yet.
All of that said, it doesn't look like there are any a11y client calls triggering this. From what I can see, this lag is all in the content process. We seem to be spending a lot of time in PruneOrInsertSubtree handling an insertion.
I think we really need a test case here for this to be actionable.
