Steps to reproduce:
Tried to update Firefox (am now 95.0.1
Actual results:
Got a message saying using an old profile wasn't OK and creating a new one was necessary (and couldn't get past til I clicked "create new profile").
Then updating.
Then find my previous session, history, bookmarks are all lost.
Expected results:
Keeping my profile ?

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Toolkit::Startup and Profile System' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please revert this change in case you think the bot is wrong.
New episode today, that may fix some chronology blurs in my initial post.
When I want to open Firefox this morning, I get the message I did get a few days ago which I hadn't "saved" then.
Popup saying :
"You've launched an older version of Firefox (popup header)
Using an older version of Firefox can corrupt bookmartks and browsing history already saved to an existing profile. To protect you information, create a new profile for this installation of Firefox."
This with two buttons : Exit (thus not getting to Firefox) and "Create New Profile".
However I got to talk with a colleague. As my computer is also used for work, there are checks made by IT team on softwares versions.
It seems I had a recent version and they have checked it as not right, and installed during the night, the "company standard" version. Which is not the latest one. I guess the version number is recorded in the profile datas ? So this morning, the latest profile was found for a newer version than the one running. That may explain the popup.
Unfortunately I had to go on.
Now the question is "Making new profiles in one thing. How about recovering infos from (one of) the 'discontinued' profile(s) to get them back ?"

If an older version of Firefox was installed after you used the newer version then this popup is working as intended. Older versions are blocked from accessing profiles used with newer versions of Firefox because this can frequently lead to serious issues that break Firefox from working entirely. The only support for sharing data between Firefox versions is that provided by Sync.
