Hi there, I asked about this in matrix chat and was recommended to post a bug in bugzilla.mozilla.org:Infrastructure. Basically my Login Name is showing up on bugzilla as shmediaproductions instead of aminomancer. I think it's showing my old name because I originally logged into bugzilla via an old GitHub account. I haven't logged in that way in a long time but I guess it still stores my old username, so it ends up being inconsistent with phabricator. I'd greatly appreciate if someone can fix this so everyone will get my name right when entering it on hg or bugzilla. 🙏

I think the cause is the "Login Name" field mentioned in this documentation (or is it this one? Just curious since they differ a lot). So, I'm hoping a BMO administrator can modify my "Login Name" to make it consistent with phabricator. On phabricator, my "username" is aminomancer and my "real name" is Shane Hughes and that's all correct. So on bugzilla, I want my "Login Name" to be aminomancer and I can set the "Real Name" myself. Thanks for looking into this, it's a small thing but it means a lot to me 😊

your login name is aminomancer already isn't it? Where you're seeing the other name is where bugzilla is displaying the start of your email address.

No I don't think that's right. My email does start with [e-mail] but that's just incidental, since my name has always displayed like this, even before I added that email address to my account (I originally signed in with GitHub). And you can find lots of users on bugzilla whose display name doesn't match their email

Maybe that's just because adding a colon to your "Real Name" parameter causes it to use the following string in your display. Or maybe that's just an additional feature on top of "login name" I'm really not sure. I don't remember ever choosing a login name explicitly, but this was a long time ago so I can't be sure. Hopefully someone can inspect my account parameters and determine for sure

This is just how BMO is designed. Certain places it displays a truncated form of your email address or otherwise called your nickname. So for the CC drop down list, it is showing just the portion of your email before the @ character (nick). Other places such as comments you have made it shows your real name value such as "Shane Hughes [:aminomancer]". BMO is inconsistent in that way and something we may want to work on in the future as I can see how it would be confusing. I think the reasoning was certain parts of the UI needed shorter forms of a users name to keep the size down. So it uses the first part of the email.

If you want to change your email, for example if you have one that has aminomancer as the first part, then you can do so in the user preferences part of BMO.

1. You will need to make sure the email address is added to your github account as a secondary email address if you continue to use github for authentication.
2. You will need to perform a password reset in BMO in order to change your email internally. First logout, then click Forgot Password at the top right. An email will be sent to you allowing you to set a password internally to BMO.
3. Once above is done, go to the Preferences page, enter the new email address you want to use and your current password. An email will be sent to the old and the new address that will have a link to finish the process. You do not need to click on the email from both accounts, just the new one.
4. Then you can continue to login using github.

Let me know if anything doesn't work as expected. Phabricator uses BMO for authentication but keeps it's username and real name values separately so those can be changed there if needed.

Thanks for the reply David. I actually log in with just email and password now. On phabricator it's showing correctly, and now on BMO I think the way I set the "Real Name" using the :username convention makes it show correctly. When someone adds me as a reviewer, if they say hg commit ... r?aminomancer is that referring to my phabricator username, or to some parameter of my BMO account? In mercurial config I have ui.username = Shane Hughes <[e-mail]> since I was following the documentation.

the r?aminomancer is referring to your Phabricator username and has nothing to do with Bugzilla. That way Phabricator will automatically set the reviewer of the revision to the username found after r?. The ui.username setting doesn't matter to Phabricator and is what shows up in the Mercurial history log.
