Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.12; rv:96.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/96.0

Steps to reproduce:

I allowed Firefox to update from 95.0.2 to 96.0

Actual results:

A strange new window opened changing the color theme to green and offering me a chance to change it back and some other cryptic settings like "lush". However, none of the links even responded, the browser windows were all frozen until restarted the browser again and the window of options disappeared.

Expected results:

No change to my browser settings WHATSOEVER. Instead a link to the documentation of the feature might have been provided. Instead, documentation for this change seems missing and it cannot be changed back.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Theme' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please revert this change in case you think the bot is wrong.

Component: Untriaged → Theme

I was unable to fix this problem using Firefox Preferences or Settings. However, under the Tools menu I found the Themes menu. Within Themes I was able to select away from the green "Colorways" and back to the System theme. No idea why Firefox had to change my color theme and lock up my windows after the update requiring yet another restart. Also no documentation link was provided on the What's New page.

Hey longwing70,
Testing with a fresh new profile could help. You can find more about creating a new profile here : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-and-diagnose-firefox-problems#w_6-create-a-new-firefox-profile .
If possible, you can test this issue on the nightly build as well. Download the build from : https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/nightly/all/ .
When updating to the latest Firefox you will receive a welcome window related to themes. If you press the buton for set this theme it will change. If you do not wish to change to a new theme just press "Not now".

Of course that is how it was EXPECTED to work, when in reality I didn't push anything, it just changed my theme and locked up so I couldn't press anything or change it back and certainly I would have pushed "Not now". Here's a radical idea: instead of me (a non-expert user who just wants to get back to work) spending yet another full day troubleshooting Firefox downloading different software, setting up different profiles, combing through about:configs and about:supports and trying to figure out how to backrev to 95 in order to test another update to 96, and fiddling around with pushed theme changes and all the other different combinations of settings and restarts and turning off extensions and deleting cookies, My radical idea is to NOT FORCE THE USER TO PICK A "NOT NOW" BUTTON AT ALL. In fact, you could promote it as a "Fun Fact" or a "Didja know" by actually using the "What's New" to document the enhancement and suggesting "Try it now!" to those so inclined. I mean, all the down-the-rabbit-hole training to become an expert user is great, really is, but some of us are exhausted just trying to keep Firefox working and we PTSD cringe at every change that comes along as "oh boy, what's going to break now?"

Did you have a sync-ed account by any chance when updating the Firefox to the newest version?
Having a sync-ed account will install any addons and themes from the previous version to the newest one.
