Thunderbird 91.5.0 and 91.5.1 on Windows 8.1
I don't store the passwords for my email accounts (most POP3) but enter them when I open Thunderbird and get prompted for them. After the migration from 78 to 91, I must have been prompted at least once and the messages got fetched in regular intervals as expected.
When I used Ctrl-Z and Ctrl-Y to undo message deletions (= moving messages back from Trash to folder and back into it), Thunderbird crashed. When launched again, it automatically connects (tries to connect without reporting a failure?) to the email accounts. Clicking an account from the toolbar menu to fetch new message prompts for the password. There is no UI element to fetch mail from every account and prompt for the password.
The developer tools' Network tab only shows requests for feeds, no traffic for email gets logged if one account gets checked and the password entered.

I am sorely confused. You mention several different issues here, but nowhere do I see you say that you didn't get prompted for a password when getting mail after a startup. Unless that's what you meant by "When launched again, it automatically connects (tries to connect without reporting a failure?) to the email accounts." ? But then you went on to say that it did prompt for the password.
I guess I'm looking for greater clarity on the steps.
When I used Ctrl-Z and Ctrl-Y to undo message deletions (= moving messages back from Trash to folder and back into it), Thunderbird crashed.
Do you have a crash report ID?

Yes, launching Thunderbird has stopped prompting for the passwords and the status bar shows messages about connecting to the servers (no passwords have been saved according to settings).
about:crashes lists no recent crash report, neither sent nor pending.
