How about distributing Netscape/Communicator for AIX as a LPP file ?
LPP files are easy to create, and can be installed using SMIT, the AIX
administration too ?
Assignee: chofmann → granrose
its rough to satisfy the best distribution scheme for each
and every unix platform, but we can put it on the list of
tasks and see if we can get to it at some point. interested
in help with this?
Just let me know what you want me to do.
Actually, the AIX LPP files (.bff) are quite simples.
Here, take a look at this ...

# restore -Tf proftpd*.0.9.bff
Please mount volume 1 on proftpd-1.2.0.9.bff.
Press the Enter key to continue.

New volume on proftpd-1.2.0.9.bff:
Cluster size is 51200 bytes (100 blocks).
The volume number is 1.
The backup date is: Wed Oct 27 16:58:15 GRNLNDST 1999
Files are backed up by name.
The user is root.

The number of archived files is 57.

So, as you see, it's just a backup file.

The only catch is the lpp_name file (nothing complicated), and the liblpp.a file
(simple too).

I have some scripts here (and Makefile) to do all the hard work.

Actually, this is mklpp from bull:

I will look into it...

I am the maintainer of the Freeware and Shareware Archive for AIX mentioned
in this defect. As soon as I can get Mozilla to build on my AIX machine,
I'm going to (try to) produce a smit-installable image and put it on the
download site. I can upload it to your site if you want.

However I'm currently completely stuck, every time I try to build mozilla
I get blocked by a different problem. I've opened 3 defects, but I believe they
aren't on the fast-track for fixing...
Right now there aren't any 'major' showstoppers, you should be able to build.

Go to the following...
http://mozilla.org/unix/aix.html
If you are using another compiler or OS version, then please
assign the bug to yourself but 'cc' me. If it is against
AIX 4.3.2 and xlC.rte 3.6 then assign them to me (jdunn@netscape.com).

But please read the FAQ first...

And if you create a smit-installable build, if you want to send me
smit-installable milestone builds, I can put them up on the mozilla download
page as well. Several folks do this for their favorite platform that we don't
already cover.
Updating QA Contact. Not sure who the AIX QA person will be, maybe hong does?

closing as won't-fix since I don't plan on ever
