User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:97.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/97.0

Steps to reproduce:

Firefox downloaded from Linux Mint Application Manager

  • clicking a mailto (email) link
  • trying to open an image file (except for .webp and .SVG) that was downloaded
  • opening most downloaded files
  • trying to navigate to the download folder after downloading any file

Actual results:

  • mail program is not opened, although it is properly configured to do so (e.g. mailto links are opened via Libre Office) In about:preferences the settings for mailto are to open with an external application (AppImage), but Firefox doesn't do so. Setting it to open with the "standard" program doesn't fix the problem. It does, however, open the program Evolution if selected there.

  • except for .webp and .SVG files, which are opened in the browser, image files are not opened – the downloaded files popup vanishes upon clicking on the image or trying to access the location of the file (folder icon). In about:preferences the settings for .jpeg and .png is set to "ask every time", but Firefox doesn't ask. Setting it to open with the "standard" program that comes with Linux Mint doesn't fix the problem.

Firefox can also open files like .zip and .tar.xz, which need to be decompressed using Linux Mint's archive extraction program and documents associated with LibreOffice files. PDF files are only opened if the relevant setting in about:preferences is set to Firefox (selecting the default application that comes with Linux Mint doesn't work). But, again, it can't open the location of the files via the file explorer.

Under "Show All Downloads", I can see that Firefox notices when a file is replaced/renamed/deleted after I try to double click (open) a file.

Expected results:

  • mail program should've been opened
  • image files that are not .SVG or .webp (such as .jpg, .png) should have been opened using the system's preferred application, or Firefox should ask me to choose an application (based on the settings in about:preferences)
  • Firefox should open downloaded files and allow me to navigate to their location via the folder icon in the download popup

All of the above work in the Firefox flatpak (I wouldn't have submitted this bug report if I could have figured out how to import my FF profile to the flatpak – I guess that's just not possible). I've tried using a new use profile and reinstalling Firefox, so this shouldn't be related to extensions or settings within Firefox.

I also made a similar post in the Linux Mint forums, which can be found here.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Core::Widget: Gtk' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please revert this change in case you think the bot is wrong.
