Steps to reproduce:
Leave FF Mac 97 alone after 9 hours of inactivity with system internet proxy disconnected so FF should not be able to connect to internet.
Actual results:
Firefox 97 Mac is not only bypasses FF network proxy settings, but also system proxy settings to silently phone home to aus5.mozilla.org as you can see from the attached screenshot.
This is a considerable breach of trust and possibly security. FF needs to respect proxy settings everywhere. You can't bypass them to check for updates, to get promotional content or whatever it's doing.
Expected results:
Nothing. If FF cannot connect to the proxy in its own network settings there should be no connections at all.

This is by design for specific requests related to updates. See Bug 1720221

Concise context from a related bug
[T]his is per design - some add-ons were abusing the proxy system preventing the application from updating properly.
See https://blog.mozilla.org/security/2021/10/25/securing-the-proxy-api-for-firefox-add-ons/
"Starting with Firefox 91.1, Firefox now includes changes to fall back to direct connections when Firefox makes an important request (such as those for updates) via a proxy configuration that fails. Ensuring these requests are completed successfully helps us deliver the latest important updates and protections to our users"
