Hi Franco, thank you for your report. We need more information from you:

  • Version of Thunderbird where you have seen this: ≡ > Help > About Thunderbird
  • Numbered steps to reproduce
    • Where do you start, in composition or main Address Book window?
  • Actual result
  • Expected result

version 91.6.1; 1: start main address book windows,I select the addresses (I cannot use the mouse);
2: I open distribution list and paste;
actual result=missing keyboard shortcut
expected result=copy paste

Flags: needinfo?(swooma)

FTR: Reporter's original summary:

Distribution list and keyboard shortcuts: To select addresses from the address book and insert them in a list distribution, keyboard commands are missing and this makes the operation difficult if not impossible for those who use speech synthesis

Confirming (STR in reporter's comment 2).

Franco, thank you for adding some detail. I understand you now, and you're right (seen in TB 91.6.1 and 99.0a1 (2022-02-23)):

  • There is no keyboard-only way of adding multiple selected contacts to a mailing list; you can only edit a (new) list and add contacts one by one using address autocomplete.
  • Thunderbird does not provide basic keyboard interaction like Ctrl/Cmd+C to copy selected contacts (which could then be pasted e.g. on the mailing list dialog).
  • Even for mouse users, the process isn't exactly straightforward, but they can drag selected contacts from the list of contacts onto a mailing list item which is visible in the directory pane.
  • In Thunderbird Daily 99.0a1 (2022-02-23), you cannot even create a mailing list via keyboard (Bug 1751282), so the entire mailing list feature is not accessible.

Version: unspecified → Thunderbird 91

Unfortunately this is unlikely to be fixed for the old Address Book in Thunderbird 91, as we're about to roll out the NEW Address Book in TB 102. So let's add it to the keyboard UX meta bug for the NEW Address Book (bug 1753093).

Version: Thunderbird 91 → Thunderbird 99
Summary: Adding multiple selected contacts from address book to a mailing list is not keyboard-accessible (only available for mouse users via drag and drop) → Adding multiple selected contacts from address book to an existing mailing list is not keyboard-accessible (only available for mouse users via drag and drop)
