Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.15; rv:98.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/98.0

Steps to reproduce:

  1. open a new tab
  2. type a few characters in the address bar until a site is suggested.
  3. Hit enter to start loading that site, and immediately hit Cmd+T to make a new tab

Actual results:

Very often, the new tab’s address bar is not functional despite appearing focused. When navigating back to the previous tab, its address bar is still focused. Pressing enter in the old tab then navigating back to the new tab frees up the new tab’s address bar.

Expected results:

The address bar of a new tab should be focused and operational regardless of the loading state of the previous tab.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Address Bar' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

Component: Untriaged → Address Bar

I have the same problem. Creating new tab sometimes doesn't allow writing anything to the URL field. After pressing Enter it works again.

I get hit by this constantly as of 98.0 (and 98.0.1)

Thanks for reporting!

I tried to reproduce this issue using Firefox Release 98, but unfortunately I wasn't able to recreate the situation. Can you please tell me the Firefox version you're using?

Could you please try if the issue occurs in safe mode. Here is a link that can help you do that:
Also a fresh new profile could help. You can find more about creating a new profile here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-and-diagnose-firefox-problems#w_6-create-a-new-firefox-profile.

I just updated to 98.0.2 and it seems to have been fixed!

Thank you for the reply, barnaby!

Since the reporter can't reproduce it anymore (and neither can I in the original reported version), I am marking it as resolved - worksforme. If the issue shall occur, the bug report may be opened again.
