Details

On some websites, issuing a right-click

  1. opens the link immediately rather than waiting for the context menu selection
  2. the context menu sometimes also superimposes on the display but the link already opened rendering the context menu moot

Occurs on POP OS 21.10 (all updates) and Firefox 98+ (98.0.2) (64 BIT). Has started in 91.0. Recent 98.0 to 98.0.2 does not fix the issue.

Only occurs on some websites. Originally, I thought this was tied to media components but it occurs on some sites with just simple links to news stories.

Can you provide a link to an example website where this happens?

Does the same problem happen on a clean profile (https://support.mozilla.org/kb/profile-manager-create-remove-switch-firefox-profiles ) ?

Summary: Righght-click Registers as Left-Click and directly opens the link with context menu also superimposed → Right-click Registers as Left-Click and directly opens the link with context menu also superimposed

I need to look at diverse news sites regularly. One site that consistently exhibits the issue is https://www.foxnews.com/ I know I have seen it on others and will monitor as I do my checks and report other sites.

I wasn't able to reproduce this issue on the latest Nightly 100.0a1 and Firefox 98 on Windows 10 x64.

Nemo, did you have the opportunity the chance to test this on a clean profile as suggested in Comment 1?

I tested today 2022-03-30. Selecting a new profile may have corrected the issue even when switching back to the original profile.

I opened a terminal and used:
firefox -P
and selected Create a new profile (I also noted the current profile).
I created the new profile.
I closed Firefox Profiles.
I opened Firefox.
Firefox showed a fresh (no customization) new profile screen. (As it should with a new profile.)
I tested the site https://www.foxnews.com where problems were confirmed before.
The right-click registering as left-click did NOT occur when using the new profile.

I closed Firefox with the new profile.
I reopened terminal and used firefox -P again.
I selected the prior (original) profile.
I opened Firefox.
I tested https://www.foxnews.com.
The right-click registering as left-click did NOT occur with the ORIGINAL profile.

Odd but I will follow-up if the issue occurs in the future.

Hm, yeah, that is definitely surprising. I will close as incomplete for now, as we didn't figure out a root cause - we will definitely reopen if you see it again and investigate further then. Thanks for all your effort!
