For one mailbox I have configured to use the drafts folder in "Local Folders". This has worked for years without problems.

Actually, the drafts folder in "Local Folders" is used as intended, but one folder I had previously created is suddenly changed to technical become a drafts folder in the account itself, i.e. the icon is changed and I can edit received messages there as if they were draft messages.

This behavior is reproducible. I had removed the folder (moving all messages into a newly created folder) the fake drafts folder, but later that new folder become drafts folder again.

I have had this same, or similar, problem for many months now. It has happened through multiple releases of both the 32 and 64 bit versions of Thunderbird running on Windows 10 and Windows 11. Changing from a server-side Drafts folder to a local drafts folder did not fix the problem. It is an annoying bug, but fortunately I found the FolderFlags add-on which can quickly fix the problem by turning the folder's draft flag off. Previous to that, multiple times a week, I had to do the same moving of messages to a newly created folder that the original reporter described.

It appears to be a feature interaction between the Auto Save of in progress messages to the Drafts folder and the Options -> Send a Copy To feature. The folder that gets its Draft flag flipped is the one that I had specified to Send a Copy To for the message I am composing. If I wait to set the Send a Copy To folder until I am finished composing and ready to send my message the flag flip does not seem to happen, or at least does not happen as often. If I specify a Send a Copy To folder and let the message sit unsent until an Auto Save is done Thunderbird reliably gets confused and mistakes the Send a Copy To folder as a Drafts folder and actually makes it that.

Cool. Thanks!

I can confirm I use send a copy to the folder in question regularly.

I can confirm this bug (Thunderbird 102.0 32-Bit)
Saving a message with "Send a copy" makes this folder a drafts-folder.
Undoing is possible by setting this folder as the standard drafts-folder for this account and then switch it back to the former drafts-folder.
