User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:97.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/97.0

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open Firefox.
  2. Open PC Settings and click "Update & Security"
  3. In the top right click "Learn More" to learn more about the latest updates to Windows.

Windows 10 21H2 (19044.1586)
Firefox 97.0.2

Actual results:

Despite Firefox being fully functional, Firefox will display the "Firefox is already running but not responding" message when trying to view the latest information about Windows updates via the URL link in Windows Update.

Clicking Cancel will leave Firefox in a functional state but the URL won't be opened, clicking Close will reload Firefox and then the URL will be automatically opened.

Clicking an interactive element in a different program that'll trigger a URL to be opened in firefox, works fine.

Expected results:

The URL to be opened in a new tab within the existing instance of Firefox without any error messages.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Toolkit::Application Update' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

Thank for the report!

I was able to reproduce this, but only when Firefox was started with "-no-remote". With this set, Firefox is unable to re-use the running instance to handle links, and tries to open a second instance with the same profile -- so, this is expected (although not ideal) behaviour.

Can you confirm whether or not Firefox was started in this way? You should be able to inspect the shortcut you launch with to find out.

I've attached an image of the shortcut I use to open Firefox.

If I run a program like InSpectre and click a URL in the program the URL will correctly open in the existing Firefox session, it's just links from PC Settings that are causing the issue.

The issue seems to have been resolved after an update to Firefox 99.

(In reply to Franpa_999 from comment #5)

The issue seems to have been resolved after an update to Firefox 99.

Huh, that's very strange. I'm going to mark this resolved, but if it happens again please don't hestitate to open a bug. Reproducing with Process Monitor running next time would be helpful too.
