One day, we should make attachment reminder great - it's actually a nice and unique feature which other email clients don't offer afasik! Originally introduced by popular demand in Bug 244455 - Help prevent forgetting inclusion of attachments.
Thunderbird's AI notices when you write about attachments, and helps you to actually add one. Unfortunately, there's a number of UX issues and bugs around the list of keywords which trigger this.
Bugs around this are easy to find when you look for them, but I feel that having a central meta bug for this will help us to move forward and prevent duplicate discussions and mushrooming. For now, I suggest trying to limit this to keyword-related bugs which is the main issue where we are stuck here.
- Currently, we trigger on old MS Office extenstions, but neither on current MS Office extensions (.docx etc.), nor on Libre Office (Open document format) extensions (.odt etc.) ... that's odd!
- File extensions should probably have their own pref, as they are international and less likely to be modified. This needs some more thought wrt backend and frontend exposure. We must ensure that both lists remain customizable somehow.
- For bonus points, maybe this could be language-sensitive to the language the user is writing in?
Here's an initial list of relevant bugs wrt attachment reminder keywords:
- Bug 1146587 - Attachment reminder keywords miss .docx, .xlsx, .pptx / .zip, .jpg, .jpeg (and .odt, .ods, .odp from bug 633818) (some recent backend discussion here)
- Bug 633818 - OpenDocument File (ODF) format extensions in compose window should show reminder window to "not forget to add the attachment" (some backend discussion here - bug 1146587 is similar but different).
- Bug 1715270 - Attachment reminder notification triggers for "keywords" in HTML/CSS source code which are not visible, esp. in <style> tag.
- Bug 1201273 - Attachment reminder keywords trigger on substring matches, causing many false positives (esp. "CV" matching random acronyms)
- Bug 1039567 - Attachment reminder false negatives for plural forms of keywords
- Bug 545837 - Attachment reminder should be triggered by keywords in current composing language, not on TB locale
- Bug 547589 - Attachment reminder keywords should allow regular expressions
