+++ This bug was initially created as a clone of Bug #1766241 +++

Steps to reproduce:

I updated TBird to 91.8.1 on Saturday 4/23/22 onto my Mac. It did not function after the upgrade.

It still doesn't function on either of my Macs ... 1 M1Mini and an older iMac. My earlier efforts to use Thunderbird 91.7 were incorrect. I must have put 91.8.1 abd have updated that to 91.9 on my Mini. Now Thunderbird doesn't work on either. It gets stuck trying to get gmail indicating that a cookie is blocked.
Here is the url:
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/web/privacy/storage_access_policy/errors/cookieblockedbypermission

At this point I am dead in the water with Thunderbird.

Actual results:

After the upgrade TBird would launch and then put up a screen indicating that I needed to enter my gmail password. Efforts to do that in gmail were unsuccessful. After several hours of puttering I finally retrieved a copy of Tbird 91.7 from backup which I had been using, and moved 91.8.1 to the trash. 91.7 worked fine!
Expected results:

91.8.1 should have worked when installed. Oddly, this morning, 91.7 was grayed out on my dock and 91.8.1 is back and working. Oddest experience I have ever had with a Mac and a reliable app like TBird. I use Firefox 99.0.1 and occasionally Brave, never Chrome, very rarely Safari.

Are you kidding? Mozilla has 39 cookies on my system! There are hundreds of cookies.

Are you kidding? Mozilla has 39 cookies on my system! There are hundreds of cookies.

And yet, your screen shot shows cookies being rejected. (hence Magnus' comment)

So if cookies are definitely enabled globally, and don't have a targetted disable for google/gmail, then we need to figure out what is happening.

Hi David,

Are you kidding? Mozilla has 39 cookies on my system! There are hundreds of cookies.

What do you mean by "Mozilla"? Thunderbird has its own cookie management which is independent of Mozilla Firefox.

(In reply to Magnus Melin [:mkmelin] from comment #1)

See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/automatic-conversion-google-mail-accounts-oauth20
I'm assuming you had disabled cookies.

I think going through that support article should enable you to solve your problem.
If not, please file a support request first:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/new/thunderbird/form
For now, looking at your screenshot, this doesn't look like a bug in Thunderbird.
Feel free to report back if you have new information which would point to a bug.

I ran across an entry that said on Rev 91.8 Thunderbird:

see

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/automatic-conversion-google-mail-accounts-oauth20

It makes it clear that 91.8 does convert Mac Thunderbird to OATH2 and that certain cookies have to be on or off for the conversion to work. I still can't figure from this document though which steps have to be taken.

  1. What should I do to Thunderbird to get ready? Which cookies on/off? When?

  2. DO I have to start/end Thunderbird before/after the OATH2 sequence?

I really want to get back to using TBird. Trying to live with gmail directly is like going to the Computer Museum.

Thanks
Dave

I followed the directions noted in the URL above.

IT WORKED!

So the only 'bug' here was to provide the user community with a heads up that instructions must be followed thus and so along with the notice that 91.8 (and presumably 91.9) availability.

Thanks for your assistance and support.

This DOESN'T work on my backup system, an older iMac running Mac OS Mojave. It is running TBird 91.9. I tried updating the cookies issue as above.

However, the error that is reported back from Thunderbird is that my system doesn't have Javascript turned on. TBird puts up the same faux problem screen as was hounding me when the settings were incorrect about the cookies.

Any advice on how to fix this? I have Chrome, Safari and Firefox - none of which have cookies turned 'off'.

Excuse ne, I meant that it was hounding me about having 'javascript turned off'!

In the config editor, find javascript.enabled and set it to true.
(You must have changed this yourself in the past, there is no UI way to set it to false)

It's not false. It's already true. Been true through all of this.

javascript.enabled true
javascript.options.asmjs true
javascript.options.asyncstack true
javascript.options.asyncstack_capture_debuggee_only true
etc

Doesn't it feel terribly odd that I am getting a screen back from "Google" that is complaining that I am using a browser with java turned off when there are no browsers open and running? No Chrome, no Safari, no Firefox. The screen looks like a browser message but it sure looks feels like it's from Thunderbird itself!

You're checking these in Thunderbird? (Not Firefox!!)

Screen shots, attached to the bug report, would be helpful. But assuing it is part of the Oauth process, all of these "browser windows" come from google, not Thunderbird.

Any advice on how to fix this? I have Chrome, Safari and Firefox - none of which have cookies turned 'off'.

External browsers are a distraction here, they are not relevant to what is happening in Thunderbird.

(perhaps you missed my email)

Couple important questions - because I am improving the directions at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/automatic-conversion-google-mail-accounts-oauth20 :

  1. Which of the two choices in the directions did you implement to get oauth to work - enable all cookies? Or did you add an exclusion?

  2. Your commment 5 implies the instructions are unclear. Are the updated instructions at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/automatic-conversion-google-mail-accounts-oauth20 more clear? Anything that isn't clear?

This is the first screen returned when trying to get this to work. This screen leads to the 2nd one where google is barfing.

This is the google rejection

Here are the screen shots I get.

I am not sure that these are 'real' screen shots coming from Google/gmail. The little green ball in the upper right corner looks a bit out of place and the blue "Learn more" link is dead.

Green ball is in upper left corner. Sorry!

In Thunderbird, visit Settings, type "config" into the search field. Click "config editor", type in "javascript". Please create a screen shot of what you see, and in this bug report, above your comment 0, do "attach new file" to attach the screen shot to this bug report

Sorry to be so inexperienced, but where in the world is "Settings"? It's not on any of the Menu drop downs. I use a Mac!

See screen shot. It's also in the Mac menu bar top left under "Thunderbird". You might see it referred to as Preferences.
