User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/101.0.4951.67 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Update an existing Thunderbird installation from 91 stable, to 101 beta.
  2. Use a Gmail account.
  3. Receive raw-text E-mails (circa 30~40% chance those E-mails have this bug). Messages reveived before the update are not retroactively affected.

Actual results:

Below the message body of the E-mail, it lists the source code of other recent E-mails received by that E-mail account.

Expected results:

Only the E-mail's actual body is displayed when opening that E-mail.

Did you run other post-91 betas or did you go directly from 91.* release to 101 beta? Just want to make sure since running an early intermediate beta (maybe 94b or 95b) may cause the problem.
I tested by running release 91.8 with a clean profile and then ran that same profile with a 97a daily build and then sent myself several batches of messages and I didn't see any joining like your attachment shows.
The simple fix to try to "repair" the Inbox folder. If that doesn't help, the next thing would be to shutdown TB and delete the INBOX and INBOX.msf file from inside the profile under ImapFolders for your account and start TB and let TB rebuild the files from scratch while downloading all inbox messages from the server. You may need to repeat this for any other folders showing joined messages.
I'm assuming you are using default mbox as the offline store and are using imap.

I must admit that I only learned about the "Repair Folder" properties option from your (Gene) comment above, and that I ended up downgrading from 101 and back to 91 stable with "--allow-downgrade" around the 22nd of May. So it could take some days before I can test out the solutions you've outlined above, but I'll get around to test it out eventually.

I can however confirm that I went straight from 91.9.* to 101.

I'm curious how many emails are in your Inbox? I tested with a about 4000.
Did the adjacent message (above and below the one shown in your attachment) display OK with no extra stuff?
Have you only seen the problem on Inbox or have you seen it with other folders?
Anyhow, no one has reported a completely reliable way to duplicate this bug so it's still open over at bug 1742975 and not resolved.
Thanks!

imreeil42, to confirm - you are using imap accounts?

(My apologies for getting back to you guys a bit late.)

"Did the adjacent message (above and below the one shown in your attachment) display OK with no extra stuff?"

The E-mail above in the inbow displayed correctly; the E-mail below did not.

"Have you only seen the problem on Inbox or have you seen it with other folders?"

I've only seen it in "Inbox" and "All E-mails" thus far.

"imreeil42, to confirm - you are using imap accounts?"

The server name in the account settings is shown as imap.gmail.com, so it seems to be IMAP indeed.

"(…) it's still open over at bug 1742975 and not resolved."

I'll see if I can take a look at it later tonight, and I've also received quite a lot of E-mail notifications from that thread in the past few days as well.

"I'm curious how many emails are in your Inbox? I tested with a about 4000."

My main inbox shows 14,619 E-mails.

"The simple fix to try to "repair" the Inbox folder."

Didn't seem to have an immediate/instant effect, at least.
