User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:91.0) Gecko/20100101 Thunderbird/91.9.1
Steps to reproduce:
Updated to 91.9.1 64 bit, when I open Thunderbird the next day says need to download manually to get the latest update which is 91.9.1, so something a bit odd is going on.
Actual results:
I updated manually to 91.9.1 - said it couldn't do it automatically. Seemed to go ok just did install, shut-down Thunderbird 'old' version and then re-started and new version was up and running inits place with all e-mail etc in correct place. So assumed all was fine.
Next day same 'invitation to update manually to latest version.
Expected results:
Not to see invite to update when already done so.

Does Thunderbird say it needs to update or is this yet another of those My antivirus knows beter things. Kaspersky was the last one I am aware of that was forcing updates that did not exist on people.
Or is it one of the situations as described in Bug 1391335 where you do not have the option to "Use a background service to install updates" enabled.

It was Thunderbird that said it needed updating and that it couldn't do itself with a link to download it from.
Happened 2 days back to back, but I have not seen it today. I'm running Avast AV it had nowt to do with this hiccup.
I'll leave the bug report live for a couple more days - if no recurrence will put it down to the buggeration factor.

So just as I thought problem had fixed itself, it has just recurred.
I did take a screen shot but can not see how to add it here.
So Windows 11 occurred at approx 20:20 UK.
Thunderbird had been opened a number of times earlier in the day and was open in the background as I made the above comment on this bug report.

So image of the pop up, guess T-bird throws a look for update's on a daily basis and that's when the can't update window appears.

I'm having the same problem on my Dell running Windows 10.
I get the message "Thuderbird can't update to the latest version...." every time I launch Thunderbird, although I installed 91.9.1 on 22 May 2022.
It is still open in V102
it is anoying to get every start a update message to the same version
Fo anyone with issue reported:
Make sure both Thunderbird and Thunderbird updater are allowed programs in the 'Firewall' which may be controlled by your Anti-Virus.
If people with problem are using 'Avast' Anti-Virus then this is being reported frequently in Support Forum and on Avast support forum.
It seems the Avast shields are blocking required access.
It may also mean in Thunderbird 'Settings' > General > Updates section, the update history is not being recorded and so it thinks it needs to get update. This effects people who are running up to date version, but the history is not recorded and cannot be updated.
It requires you to make exceptions for the following:
Add as exception: 'aus.thunderbird.net' and also 'www.thunderbird.net'
use info at link: https://support.avast.com/en-ww/article/Antivirus-scan-exclusions
Please check Firewall and make exceptions as advised and see if this fixes your issue.
Also report on which Anti-Virus and Firewall you are using.

does comment 7 help?

Yes. Somebody must have suggested this solution previously, because a. when I checked my Avast settings a moment ago, 'aus.thunderbird.net' and 'www.thunderbird.net' were already listed as exceptions, and b. I have not had this problem for some time now. Thanks!
