I think this has something to do with another bug that is listed as resolved,
but I do not know how to re-open that bug report, so I am starting again, here. 

I also, believe that bug report FIX might be the reason this is acting this way.

Please email me what ever I can do, please. I am new to this, but would like to
help.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Open mail
2.Verify "Start new message above reply" is set
3.Reply to a message
4.Note the first chars do not type... and a CR/LF seem to appear.

Actual Results:  
Deleted chars

Expected Results:  
Start typing and top see text.

I tried to DL the latest build, but got confused on how to do that.  Would you
please take the time to tell me how, so I can be more effective at bug reports?

Duplicate of bug 173818, which was fixed in trunk builds later than your build.

-trunk builds are the very latest in code, approx two new are made per day.
-branch builds are not as updated and are specialized somehow, mostly somewhere
on their way to become..
-release builds - which are usually more stabile builds
