(Reporter: mickael.desjouis, Unassigned)

Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:101.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/101.0

Steps to reproduce:

  • Set Applications download preferences to Always Ask (ie: PDF file)
  • Click on a pdf file link
  • At the download prompt choose Open with Firefox or Open with (Adobe Reader)

Actual results:

The result is the same, it download and open them and the file is store in Downloads folder whereas i only ask to open it.

Expected results:

The file is store in a temporary folder or deleted after view.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Downloads Panel' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

Component: Untriaged → Downloads Panel

This bug also occurs when the default action for a file type is set to open the file in a program.

Being able to open files without permanently downloading them is one of Firefox's few remaining killer features over most Chromium-based browsers, so I hope this gets fixed soon.

This behavior is expected to avoid dataloss.
Firefox 102 will contain a new pref browser.download.start_downloads_in_tmp_dir that can be flipped in about:config.
