User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.2b) Gecko/20021029 Phoenix/0.4 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.2b) Gecko/20021029 Phoenix/0.4 I am attempting to login to hotmail from my college network. I am certain that my login details are correct, i login daily from home. I am able to access all others sites as normal from this network, including other webmail sites. I have no idea what the problem is other than the fact i am behind a proxy. (Obviously i hvae correctly set up my proxy settings as i am able to access other sites.) I can reproduce this every time - i guess it wont be so easy for you. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Come to my college. (Maybe get behind another proxy server?) 2. Attempt to log in to hotmail. Actual Results: It just seems to hang, eventually times out. No change happens on screen. Expected Results: Login to hotmail as normal.
This is because hotmail is using a cruddy icky awful browser sniffer, or your proxy is timing out (in which case you should talk to your college). Login, get bad browser page, go back to main page, login, get bad browser page, repeat... *ewws*
I used to have this problem with Yahoo mail and P 0.3. After I submitted my login/password, the same login page was displayed over and over again.. but opening mail.yahoo.com in a new tab showed me my inbox.. I don't have this problem now (Win and Linux version of P 0.4), neither I had this problem before 0.3
Kim: 'This is because hotmail is using a cruddy icky awful browser sniffer' - this is not the case because i am able to successfuly login to hotmail daily using phoenix from home. 'your proxy is timing out (in which case you should talk to your college)' - this may be the case, how ever internet access is far from slow here, we are joined to the British University Network 'Janet'. I am able to login to other web mail sites and HOTMAIL sucessfully using IE. I did make these points in my original post.
Az, is this limited to Phoenix or does it also happen in Mozilla?
Thanks for the reply, I thought your sever might be a problem since when running through a proxy server myself I don't experience any problems at all, despite being on a very slow modem. Does the configuration for phoenix differ from ie in any way?
Kim: I have configured both just for the proxy address/port and nothing else. Andre: I will install mozilla and try that when i return to college on monday.
Bugs like this are very likely not specific to Phoenix and are probably already reported on Phoenix.
The same problem occurs when using mozilla: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.2b) Gecko/20021016
Over to Mozilla for duplication.

I'm encountering a similar difficulty, even though I can get to other sites just fine from behind the proxy. I do NOT get a browser "hang" but I get the Hotmail login page (http://www.hotmail.com) over and over again. I did NOT get this behavior with the 2002111808 Win32 build, but I AM with the 2002112208 Win32 build. Peace.....
Well, I tried to login to ANOTHER site and got the SAME behavior as with Hotmail. This time, I got a message indicating that I need to make sure cookies are enabled. ALL cookies are enabled, so I don't know what's going on. Peace....
I've had this same problem for a while now, not just at Hotmail but at any server that does redirection to a secure site. I may have a solution for you. I'm not sure about your specific case, but the proxy server I'm behind requires manual configuration. The only one I had filled out in my Proxy Settings was the HTTP Proxy; I left the others blank. This worked great up until a few weeks ago, when I began to see the timeout issue that you're getting. My solution was to copy the HTTP Proxy settings into the SSL Proxy settings. After that, everything worked OK again. I'm not sure if this can be considered a regression or if this really is The Way It's Supposed to Work. But maybe this could help to narrow it down a little. I first noticed it when I upgraded to RC1. -AC

I followed Alex's advice and added my SSL proxy settings. All works good now, thanks for your help. As far as I am concerned this is resolved.
