I am not sure if the current behavior is kinda expected or not.

STR:

  1. Go to about:preferences#general , scroll the page down to the "Applications" section. Choose the action "Always Ask" for the content type "mailto"
  2. Open Firefox, click a mailto link, for example "send mail" link on https://www.rapidtables.com/web/html/mailto.html#examples
  3. Select "Firefox" from the application list, then click "open link"

Actual result:
Nothing happens

If I select "Chrome" for step 3) and then click "open link", a new Chrome browser's window is opened with the black URL bar.

There are some old bugs which look related but not exactly the same, see See-Also.

This is a bit surprising to me. Are you seeing this on macOS, and if so, does it reproduce on Windows or Linux as well? Also, to confirm, when you say "nothing happens" - you mean the dialog disappears, but no tab opens nor is there any other activity which indicates we tried to actually do something with the mailto URI, right? Any errors in the browser console? (I see NS_ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND: Component returned failure code: 0x80520012 (NS_ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND) [nsIHandlerInfo.launchWithURI] in the browser console on my mac, but would be useful to know if you're seeing something else)

I am seeing this on Windows. As you understood, "nothing happens" meant to be "after I click 'open link', the dialog disappears, but no tab opens nor is there any other activity which indicates we tried to actually do something with the mailto URI." I am seeing the same error as you, that is NS_ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND: Component returned failure code: 0x80520012 (NS_ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND) [nsIHandlerInfo.launchWithURI]

On macOS, I am seeing a different behavior. After I selected Firefox and clicked "open link" in Step 3), a new window opened, then I was asked again to choose the application to open the link. However, for this second time, Firefox wasn't listed as one of the default options. If I chose any other application, I would be forwarded correspondingly.

Flags: needinfo?(htsai)

This is definitely confusing, but not a very common usecase.
