Details

Gnucleus (gnucleus.sf.net) implements a cool feature which automatically updates to the next release when the next release is detected. Some might argue that this is bloat, but I would find this useful. It would be very convenient, and also useful in limiting the damage caused by any exploits. Of course, there would need to be an option to turn it off.
See also bug 23117, "Ability to check for new versions automatically".
This is different from 23117 for 2 reasons: 1. Auto-evolve would require release detection, but would extend it. 2. The is a RFE for Phoenix, not Mozilla.
I'm sorry, but I don't believe this is ever going to happen. Currently we don't even support installing a new build into the same folder as Phoenix is currently installed in.
André- You are correct that this feature will certainly have to wait until we can overwrite installs. However, this should happen soon, no? Perhaps auto-evolve could be a 1.0 target.
the Phoenix team won't be implementing this. Perhaps someone will do it at mozdev as an extension.
