Firefox View has a large surface dedicated to instructing me to enable tab syncing, with no ability to dismiss it.

As I sync between my work and personal systems, I explicitly do not want tabs to be shared across the devices. It would be nice to have a way to skip that step.

I'm not sure I understand this part of the request. That surface has no value without syncing tabs, so "skip" wouldn't really do something meaningful? As in, that surface is supposed to be a list of tabs from other devices (ordered by MRU). If we have no tabs access, there is no list of tabs, so nothing to display.

Product + UX have explicitly decided not to provide a way to dismiss the sync sign-up flow (including this step) - it was raised by engineering at the design stage. Once you complete the setup steps, you can toggle showing the list of tabs from within that UI (e.g. to avoid work/personal tabs being shown, as in your example). All the other surfaces on this page have alternative access points (colorways in about:addons, recently closed tabs in the hamburger panel, history menu, etc.) and so if the user doesn't want to use sync they can choose not to use this surface (and the button can be removed from the toolbar by the user, too).

Thanks for the prompt response.

ah, it wasn't clear to me that that surface's only function was for tab sharing; with that knowledge it's obvious now!

and so if the user doesn't want to use sync they can choose not to use this surface

It's correct that I can choose not to use it; however there's no way to indicate that I don't want to use it and to remove it from the page. It's quite good at drawing my attention!

I guess when that surface can be collapsed and Firefox remembers the collapsed state between refreshes then this issue goes away.

Sure, I mostly meant that you could just not use Firefox View at all. The main feature and raison d'etre right now is the tab sync, and colorways - but there's an alternative for colorways. We don't plan on any other features besides those and recently closed tabs (which also has alternative entrypoints) for the initial release.

I guess when that surface can be collapsed and Firefox remembers the collapsed state between refreshes then this issue goes away.

I don't think we currently persist collapsed state for either container. Sarah, is that right? If not, it's probably worth flagging that up with UX/product in a separate ticket.

Flags: needinfo?(sclements)

We don't persist collapsed state and product only wanted the synced tabs list to be collapsible, not the entire container with setup sets.
