I've got a patch. most likely we'll check in the code, but not make it visible
to end users (until jglick decides if she wants it.)
if she doesn't, developers can still just uncomment in threadPane.xul to use it.
here comes the patch.

neil@parkwaycc.co.uk actually fixed this
it's the "order received" column, off by default.
