When replying to an email that has attached JPEGs, and choosing to send the
reply as plain text, the recipient receives message that only contains the line
"This is a multi-part message in MIME format. "  Looking at the message in the
Sent folder, you see the same result.  Obviously, a lot of message text is lost,
confusing the recipient, and forcing the sender to re-create what he typed
originally.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Receive an email with image attachments, so they appear in the body of the email.
2. Press the Reply button.
3. Type your reply above the quoted original message.
4. Press the Send button.
Actual Results:  
The recipient receives a message that only contains the line "This is a
multi-part message in MIME format. "
Reviewing the message that was saved in the Sent folder, you see the same result.

Expected Results:  
Mozilla MailNews ought to have sent all the text in the message as a plain text
email, dumping the attachments.  OR, it should not have allowed me to send it in
plain text, if the result of doing so would be that any contents would be lost
in the process.

I don't believe that any other circumstantial data will be helpful here.

related/dup: bug 168386, bug 171875. Those seem to mention only forwarding
breaking though, not replying

I have this error in mozilla 1.2. I downgrade to mozilla 1.1 and the problem
disapear.
