Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:102.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/102.0

Steps to reproduce:

Look at an e-mail message.

Actual results:

I see the message body, but I also see the letters "null", or sometimes "nullnull", at the beginning of the message body. If I switch to viewing a different message and then switch back, the "null"s are gone. If I look at the message via my e-mail providers web interface, I see no "null"s.

Expected results:

I shouldn't see "null" in the message body that's not actually in the message body.

I've seen this recently, with certain emails. Might be related to whether the previous msg contained an event or not.

Summary: "null" displayed at the start of message bodies → "null" displayed at the start of some message bodies (might involve events in previously viewed msg)

Reporter, we need to try and find reproducable steps for this bug.

  • POP or IMAP?
  • Are you using add-ons?
  • Does this happen with ≡ > Help > Troubleshoot Mode…?
  • Does this happen for every message?
  • Does this happen every time on a message where it has happened before?
  • Are you seeing a pattern involving your previous actions, e.g. every time you look at a certain other message with an invite, then switch to the next message, the next message will be affected?
  • Any other observations?

Might also be related to Bug 1778453 and its kin -- partial page of text or HTML code is displayed following a COMPACT and corruption. I'm thinking in this case we see just a tiny but viable piece of another message tacked on to the beginning of the real message...

I don't think so. Reporter clearly states that only "null" or "nullnull" is prepended to the message. This is clearly leaking from JavaScript into the message body. The rest of the message body is always OK, no mangling.

Maybe from Bug 1748449?

  • POP or IMAP?
    IMAP
  • Are you using add-ons?
    No.
  • Does this happen with ≡ > Help > Troubleshoot Mode…?
I don't know. It happens very intermittently. Even if I ran in troubleshoot mode for days on end, if I didn't see it, that wouldn't prove much, but I would have to run for days on end to give even a partial answer. Let me know if you want me to investigate this further, and, if so, what you'd like me to try.
  • Does this happen for every message?
Definitely not. It happens very seldom.
  • Does this happen every time on a message where it has happened before?
I've never seen it persist on a message. Every time I've seen this happen on one message, if I switch to looking at another one, then switch back to the one that had the "null", I don't see any "null" again on the message on which it originally appeared.
  • Are you seeing a pattern involving your previous actions, e.g. every time you look at a certain
other message with an invite, then switch to the next message, the next message will be affected?

I haven't noticed any correlations with whether there's an invite in the message, or a previous message. I can, however, check that if you like. If you'd like me to check that, please let me know the sequence of actions you'd like me to take (e.g. "have someone send you an invite, look at the invite, then look at another message"). I can also execute any such test sequence both in troubleshoot mode and out of it.
  • Any other observations?
No, sorry. It's very intermittent, and not at all persistent, so it's the worst kind of problem to reproduce I'm afraid.

I just saw this again, not in troubleshoot mode. I looked at a message I had just downloaded and it had "nullnullnull" at the beginning of the text. The message I had previously looked at did not have an invitation in it. The message with "nullnullnull" was a message containing remote content that was not displayed. As usual, looking at another message and then coming back to the "nullnullnull" message showed the message body without the "nullnullnull".

Summary: "null" displayed at the start of some message bodies (might involve events in previously viewed msg) → "null" displayed at the start of some message bodies
