When scrolling downpage on Facebook, as I approach the bottom, all posts begin to auto-scroll on their own, making them unreadable.

RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 1779404

Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:103.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/103.0

Steps to reproduce:

This began with Fx 103 I believe. My Facebook account is setup to display the newest posts first. Normally, when I scroll all the way down the page on Facebook, on my Windows 10 PC, older posts will load under the post I was viewing last. As they load I am still normally able to move up to view previous posts, or down to view the ones that just loaded. This is with and without my few extensions enabled. It has not been a problem before mid July of 2022.

In a nutshell, I load Facebook and begin scrolling down to read more posts. When I reach close to the bottom, all hell breaks loose!

Actual results:

Since this bug began happening, once I scroll all the way down with either the mouse wheel or the Page Down button on my keyboard, older posts start to load but previously seen posts begin jumping up and down at the same time. This makes the entire page unstable and I have to hit Refresh or F5 to stop it. I have disabled and re-enabled my very few extensions and none of them stopped it from happening. The auto-scrolling sometimes goes away, then returns. When it occurs the entire page becomes unreadable.

Expected results:

The page should load more older posts each time I either spin the mouse wheel or hit the Page Down button. Previously loaded posts should remain static, where they were as I fist loaded the page. The older posts should stretch out the vertical scrollbar and allow me to continue wheeling or buttoning down to read these newly loaded posts.

This bug is being discussed on a Computers forum where I am a moderator. Here is that topic, titled Facebook auto scrolls:

I think I may have narrowed the auto-scroll problem down to the Firefox Color extension. I use it to add contrast to my tabs. When I disabled it, Facebook didn't auto-scroll. I find this concerning since Mozilla publishes both the browser and the extension.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Core::Panning and Zooming' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

Component: Untriaged → Panning and Zooming

Have you been running with this extension disabled since then? Has the problem recurred at all?

I disabled all extensions, reset Firefox 103, rebooted, launched a FreshFox, loaded and logged into Facebook and scrolled down. At first it seemed fine. After a half hour or so Facebook began auto-scrolling again. That was with no extensions at all. On Aug 24, I upgraded to FX 104.0 and Facebook seems to be stable when I scroll down, for now. I will report back if the scrolling resumes, or if adding an extension causes it to start again.

Follow-up to my last comment;
I am currently using Firefox 104.0, with no extensions or add-ons. It just started auto-scrolling content on FAcebook after being stable for the first day. When Facebook first loads, all is well. But, after a while, when I scroll all the way down to load more content, the existing posts move up and down and will not stop until all the newly loading posts have fully loaded.

I just tried the same scrolling down on the latest version of Google Chrome and it has no such issues. New content loads without interfering with existing posts at all. This is a Firefox issue. My Internet connection is via Comcast and is clocked at 119 mbps down and 12.5 up.

Thanks for the updates. It would have been really strange if Firefox Color affected the issue in some way!

I'm going to mark this as a duplicate of bug 1779404 which is the main place where we've been tracking this Facebook issue.
