Steps to reproduce:

  1. Have Firefox open with multiple windows and tabs
  2. Have something like Wordpress open in one of the windows, with unsaved work.

Actual results:

  1. Some of the windows were closed. Stopped on the window with the alert "would you like to save changes before closing." (something like that. an OS alert not an in-site alert.
  2. Quit app and restarted
  3. 8 out of 12 windows-full-of-tabs did not restore. The window with the Wordpress tab did restore.

I believe this is a thing that happens regardless of which option is clicked on step 1.

Expected results:

All windows closed are re-opened upon relaunch.

My working theory is that a quit instruction destroys the open windows after writing them to the session file, but that it expects all the windows to close and record themselves accurately, and when this process is interrupted it either overwrites the session file or things go sideways.

This has been a bug for at least 5 years.

Summary: Windows of tabs lost on quit when a tab has an alert before closing. → When quitting, windows of tabs are lost on restart when a tab has an alert before closing.

Could you please confirm the STR to make sure that I understood them properly?

  1. Open multiple windows with Firefox, each one of them with several tabs opened
  2. Close all the windows by using the Exit option from the side menu
  3. Open Firefox again and go to History > Restore previous session from the side menu

Following the steps described above, I was not able to reproduce his issue on Firefox 104.0.2.

Sorry for the delay.

This is not always reproduceable(In reply to Ina Popescu from comment #4)

This is not quite specific enough.

  1. At least one of the windows needs to be for a site with a modal when the window is closed (such as "closing this window will not save your work. are you sure?" .... Wordpress does this.
  2. I'm not sure whether File...Exit does it. It does happen when right-clicking on the Firefox icon in the taskbar and clicking "Close All Windows"
  3. My system is setup with the "open previous tabs and windows" setting checked in General preferences.

I've reproduced the issue using the latest versions Nightly 110.0a1 and Firefox 109.0 on Windows 10 x64 when following the steps described in Comment 6.
To be noted that the issue occurs when right-clicking on the Firefox icon from the taskbar and selecting "Close All Windows" . I couldn't reproduce the issue when using the Exit option from the side menu.
As far as I could tell the issue is not related to the websites accessed using Firefox.
