Steps to reproduce:
automatic Firefox update on 8/16
Actual results:
ALL bookmarks and pinned windows lost
Expected results:
should NOT HAVE been removed by update

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Bookmarks & History' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

Is there bookmarkbackups folder in your profile folder?

If pinned windows (tabs?) were also lost, then this is more likely a profile issue (e.g. new profile created), rather than specific to bookmarks.

Jeff, did the info from comment 4 solve with your problem?
Yes it Did. I suspect my profile was locked by Carbonite backup and could not be loaded at startup.
