Possible for TB to default to unselecting "Place a copy in Sent Folder" for IMAP account of providers which are known to place a copy in sent folder themselves?

Steps to reproduce:

There is an option to automatically copy the message after sending to Sent Items. This might no longer be applicable and/or required particularly for IMAP accounts because I am observing that most of the servers do this automatically. And if Thunderbird also does, there is a duplicate copy of the message in Sent Items.

Can this be automatically unselected for IMAP accounts at the minimum?

Actual results:

Place a copy in Sent Items is automatically selected resulting in duplicate copy of the email in the folder.

Expected results:

Duplicate copy should not be there in Sent Items meaning the checkbox to place a copy of sent items might no longer be required to be automatically selected.

Some servers put a copy there automatically, but since we can't know they will do this...

deepak.vasudevan, can you give examples of mail servers who auto-save a copy of sent message with IMAP?

I guess this RFE would only be possible if we would add data about servers who save their own copy to Sent into autoconfig DB, which looks like a lot of work for little gain (CC Ben Bucksch). Again we may not know if this can be configured by user on server side and to switch off the server-side auto-copy. Not having any copy of a sent message is a big problem which we'd want to avoid.

Otoh, if you know that your server does its won Sent copies and you don't want double copies, you only need to change the setting in TB once. Which could be acceptable imo.

So maybe this is wontfix for now. Let's hear what Alex thinks.

Summary: "Place a copy in Sent Folder" might no longer be relevant → Possible for TB to default to unselecting "Place a copy in Sent Folder" for IMAP account of providers which are known to place a copy in sent folder themselves?

Yeah, I agree with the assessment.
Unfortunately we can't have an always accurate list of services that do that since it's not a "fixed standard" and this option can change based on the server admin, so we would be almost always out of sync with reality.
Better not risk it and keep the default we already have.

At least as a workaround we should have a feature to scan for any duplicate emails in the folders.
