as discussed in a mtg, we should rearrange the Bookmarks toplevel menu items so that its features are more visible to users, such as importing bookmarks. what we have now: Bookmarks > Add Page to Bookmarks... Bookmarks > Manage Bookmarks > Show Bookmarks in Sidebar Bookmarks > Manage Bookmarks > Create New Folder Bookmarks > Manage Bookmarks > Create New Separator (disabled/unimplemented) Bookmarks > Manage Bookmarks > Import Bookmarks... how about getting rid of the submenu and placing those items at the toplevel? something like: Bookmarks > Add Page to Bookmarks... Bookmarks > Show Bookmarks in Sidebar Bookmarks > Create New Folder Bookmarks > Import Bookmarks... other suggestions?
What about a 'cleaner' layout, one group at one place, it will be simpler to understand. '' means a separator blank line menu item. 'Add Page to Bookmarks...' is renamed 'Add Bookmark...' no Bug filled yet. 'Bookmarks Toolbar' is renamed 'Favorites bar' see Bug 178691 RFE. Bookmarks > Add Bookmark... Bookmarks > '' Bookmarks > Favorites bar > 'items in favorites bar' Bookmarks > '' Bookmarks > 'list of bookmarks' View > Show/Hide Toolbar View > Customize Toolbar... View > '' View > Show/Hide Favorites bar View > Show/Hide Status bar View > '' View > Show/Hide Sidebar View > Show Bookmarks in Sidebar View > Show History in Sidebar File > Import Bookmarks... The first block of View menu is for Page contents/bars. The second block of View menu is for Sidebar contents. + Create New Folder/Separator can be reached by the icons in the Sidebar - Bookmarks tab and add icons for Create New Folder, Create New Separator (and Import Bookmarks). Having menu items for Create New Folder/Separator is useless because the Sidebar must be visible to use them, so the perfect place is in the icons in the Sidebar. + The History tab in the Sidebar can also have a line of icons at the top for perhaps later functionnalities: Sort, Hierarchical, Delete, etc.
I forgot to mention that in Bug 175467 RFE 'Implement New Folder function on Add Bookmark dialog' which should be extended also to Add a Separator button will allow to Create New Folder/Separator without having to show the Sidebar. That means Add Bookmarks will show a dialog/sheet with: Name: 'urlname field' Create in: 'bookmarks folders popup' [x] Bookmark All Tabs (Add a New Folder) (Add a New Separator) (Cancel) (OK) Like that all the possibilities are accessible from the Add Bookmark menu/dialog or from the Sidebar.
what about placing "import bookmarks" in the application menu?
I don't see any precedent for that. Both Mail.app and Address Book have Import-related items on the File menu.
Yes, put Import and Export in the File menu.
I think that having Import Bookmarks as a top level item at the top of the Bookmarks menu is a bad idea, since it's not used most of the time. I agree (alas) that it belongs on the file menu with the other file operations.
