There may already be a bug out there on this. I'm using a 11/3 clobber build
that include's joki's fix for Bug #17887 and akk's fix for some more event key
bustage.
I'm trying to send a message and I type something in the message body.
Hitting return appears to do nothing. i.e. the caret doesn't move to the next
line. If I type another character after I hit return then the caret jumps to the
next line.

This is probably related to 17887, assigning to joki.
There is a workaround. Not for dogfood, we will release note for dogfood.
Putting on PDT- radar.

Whoa...you gotta be kidding me! =) This is definetly a dogfood bug.
Maybe I didn't explain the context of the bug enough. I'll try again.
You go to send a message.
You type a line like "hello scott" and hit enter. the caret does not move to the
next line
of the message. It totally throws you off every time you type a line.
I'd like to have you reconsider this for dogfood. Speaking from the point of
someone who uses 5.0 mail exclusively today for dogfood, this bug really hurts.
Yes you can just keep typing more characters and it will go to the next line
but that's not an obvious mode for lots of users to think in when you are
sending a message. Most people would hit enter, see that you don't go to the
next line and say this sucks and give up.
I guess I have a strong opinion on this =).
Yes, PDT team, please reconsider. This is an operation that everybody will run
into.

Hmmm..I'd like to try to argue that this is an M11 stopper.
Can't we just quickly take a look and see when the regression happened Tuesday?
I'm pretty sure this worked in Monday's build.

M12 is reserved for the bugs that have made the PDT+ hit list. If Joe can get
through his PDT+ bugs he will look at it. Talking with him today, he knows it
will take a few days to get the issue resolved. Of course, if the PDT team
accept this one, then we will bump it up.
Summary: [DOGFOOD] Hitting enter isn't moving caret until i type another character → [DOGFOOD] [BETA BLOCKER]Hitting enter isn't moving caret until i type another character

Putting on pdt- radar. Not mandatory for dogfood, must be fixed for beta.

well, it looks like this bug took care of itself =).
In a release build on windows from 11/5, I'm not longer seeing this problem.
I'll mark this as fixed if someone else can try it out and verify it.

can someone on Mail team verify this one?

This bug did not take care of itself. I've been making progress on it but it
will still be a week or so before I can check it in.
It's possible for some documents that it will appear to work at the moment, but
the bug is not fixed. reopening

Clearing FIXED resolution due to reopen of this bug.

This looks like a DUPLICATE of bug 16715, "DOGFOOD] Do not see blinking or
still cursor after hitting the Enter/Return key", PDT+, REOPENED - currently
being worked on.
At least, the symptom seems identical.
