I didn't put this in Networking: SMTP, because I don't think it's a problem with
the actual "connection", but rather, the program never makes one.
When I installed Mozilla Mail to do my emailing, I couldn't get the SMTP server
to work after entering a new address for it ... I tried *everything*, but
Mozilla was saying it couldn't connect. I checked the network communication, and
Mozilla wasn't even trying ...
I clicked "advanced" (in mail and newsgroup settings) and found that there were
two copies of my main SMTP server, so I deleted one -- but both copies were
deleted (as if they shared the same ID# or something?). I thought "****",
clicked OK, and then clicked "advanced" again -- this time there was a BLANK
entry...and it wouldn't let me delete it (because it was set to default). so I
made a new one (with my proper SMTP server's info), and set IT to default. then
I deleted the BLANK entry. This solved my problem, and I can connect and receive
email just fine now... but the bug still exists.
I'm not sure how to reproduce it because I dont want to lose my settings all
over again, but I'm sure it'll happen again if I add another server or mess with
any of that stuff. This may be a duplicate of other bugs, but I think it's the
most detailed.
This sounds like a duplicate of bug 146488.
Please always include build ID in bug-reports.
Mozilla release 1.2.1, brand-new profile (old profiles in .mozilla* and
.netscape* were completely removed prior to installation of 1.2.1, as advised
in the release notes). I created my profile to use my home SMTP server, but
shortly thereafter changed it to use a more generic 'mail' for when I am on the
road. I now have duplicate entries for both SMTP servers, and each of my
accounts had to be changed to "Always use default server".
