Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/105.0.0.0 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce:

Nothing. I started Firefox, used it. Nothing special.

Actual results:

Firefox has been freezing in the past few months. It used to happen once in awhile.
Now it's happening faster. Maybe within a few minutes,
I have followed all the recommendations I found online -
disable hardware acceleration, disable any extension I recently added,
I have updated FF many times.
nothing works.

The only way to shut it down, is to use <alt> + F4.

Now I am using Chrome in the interim, but hope this can be fixed.
Any suggestions?

Expected results:

Firefox should have stayed functional!

Product: Firefox → WebExtensions

Hello,
I’m from Webextensions QA and I’m attempting to reproduce the issue in order to confirm it.

You mentioned in the report that you disabled recently installed extensions. Did you by any chance mean that you disabled all extensions and still the issue occurs? I’m asking this since if there are still some extensions installed and enabled they might cause the freezes, however if there are no extensions enabled and the issue still occurs, then it’s an issue with Firefox and not caused by extensions. In this case, I will change the component/product of the bug to better reflect the possible causes and this will let the appropriate team with more knowledge of this take a further look.

Would you be willing to check if the issue occur when no extensions are enabled or try Troubleshoot Mode? Starting Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode will launch the browser with extensions and themes disabled.

To start the browser in Troubleshoot Mode please follow the instructions here - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/diagnose-firefox-issues-using-troubleshoot-mode#w_how-to-start-firefox-in-troubleshoot-mode – and afterwards check if the issue still occurs.

On my end I did not encounter any freezes whatever the circumstances.

Thank you !

Alex,

Thank you!
I woke up with an idea about it a few mornings ago.
I renamed the .mozilla hidden folder ( I use debian linux )
to .xmozilla. Then restarted firefox. This of course had no add-ons or extensions
or user profiles.

I left firefox up and running all day long - and it never froze.
Now, question - what was causing the freezes? An extension, or a profile?

I also ran it in Troubleshoot mode - also no freezes.

I reinstated the original .mozilla folder. So now it's running with its original baggage.
and , So far it has not frozen. ????

Any further things you'd like me to try...?
I think you've shown me that the basic engine is OK..
I will continue to use it this way, to see if the freezing starts again.

Hey Phil,

I presume that the current setup you are using has all the extensions you had installed beforehand, right? And the freezes stopped occurring even so, correct?

A list of the extensions you have installed would be helpful so I can check them one by one to see if maybe one of them was causing the freeze or to at least rule out extensions causing the issue.

Thank you !

Alex,
Suddenly, after 4-5 days of no freezes, it started again...I disbaled every extension but one
(uBlock origin), and restarted. Still happened.
So, I went back to the "plain vanilla" .mozilla profile folder. So far no freezes.
I will deliver you a list of what I had a little later this morning ( pressed for time right now ).
Thanks again..

Phil

Alex,

Thanks much, sir...I really like Firefox and wish to use it vs Chrome..

To answer your question, no, the .mozilla folder I restored a few days ago had only a subset of
extensions, yet the freezing resumed, as I said yesterday.

Here is what I was running with in that recent profile..
uBlock origin ( this was removed last of all - it was still freezing even with this..)
Read Aloud ( TTS )
HTTPS everywhere

When the freezing first started, i removed these:
Fakespot
Ghostery
NoScript
Privacy Badger

Right now I am using my "blank" .mozilla folder - i.e. no extensions, bookmarks etc. Brand new, created by Firefox.

I will continue with this setup to see if it happens again, and let you know.

Phil

Alex!
Firefox just froze again..no extensions and a plain vanilla .mozilla folder.
I was revising a search in the Startpage search engine, and my mouse clicks
suddenly did not work. Couldn't revise the search string. But Menu items still pulled down, so I chose file/quit
and firefox closed.

Hope this will reveal something about the bug to trace down.
I will watch for another freeze, and try to explore all the details for you.

Thanks,

Phil

Hey Phil,

Since Firefox froze even when no extensions were installed, it’s clear extensions are not causing this.

I will change the component/product of the bug to better reflect the possible causes and this will let the appropriate team with more knowledge of this take a further look.

In the meantime, any further info you can provide would be helpful for the other team to try and pinpoint the issue.

Thank you !
