Steps to reproduce:
Use the right-click context menu.
This happens in a Debian Gnome Wayland desktop running Thunderbird inside a Flatpak.
Actual results:
Super irritating flickering.

I saw other reports about flickering menus on Wayland. That may be a toolkit issue.

There's nothing to synchronize, all the changes are in code we share with Firefox.
However, this bug is reported against Thunderbird 102, while the fix is only in Firefox 106+. Thunderbird would have picked it up starting with Thunderbird 106.0beta5.
It may be possible to get the fix uplifted to the mozilla-esr102 branch so Thunderbird 102 can benefit. In order to do that, I suggest taking the following steps:
- Verify that Thunderbird 106.0beta 3 or beta 4 does present the bug
- Verify that Thunderbird 106.0beta5 does not present the bug
- Prepare a test build of Thunderbird 102.4.0 with the additional fix applied, verify that it fixes the issue
Essentially, we have to make our case that the uplift fixes the problem. I'm happy to run the test build once it's verified that current betas are unaffected.

I am frequently observing flickering in nested context menus in Thunderbird in KDE Plasma 6 Wayland sessions. Currently, I am using Thunderbird 148.0 (65-Bit) installed from the official package repository of Arch Linux. It is an up-to-date Endeavour OS installation on a ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 6 (x86_64). I have been observing this problem regularly since I started using KDE Plasma (currently version 6.6.2) in Wayland mode about two years ago. Thunderbird was always kept apt-to-date via the Arch package repository. I never installed it as a Flatpack.
Interestingly, the context menus are working fine as long as I am only working on the laptop, i.e., single (built-in) screen without any attached external screens. Once I connect one or more external screens to my laptop (it doesn't matter whether directly or via a docking station), the flickering context menus appear on any of the external screens. Only the built-in screen is not affected. It does not make a difference if I set the screen on which I work with Thunderbird to be the primary screen. The flickering typically happens from level 3 or deeper. Often, there are no problems with the first and second level context menus.
The position of the context menu does not seem to be a major issue. The issue appears also for context menus, when the mouse cursor is in the middle of the screen and there is amble of space around for any level of the opened context menu till the border of the screen.
Sometimes, the context menus are working also without flickering on any level on secondary screens, but at some point the issue always reappears (even in the same Thunderbird session without any switch to other application or movement of its window).
I have not observed similar problems with context menus in other GTK applications. I tested, e.g., GIMP, Inkscape, and GTKwave.
The flickering context menus are a very annoying usability issue. Personally, I use them a lot to quickly move mails to sub-folders. The workaround by dragging the selected mail to the destination folder in the folder pane on the left takes much more time and scrolling, as I have a long list of folders with partially deep nesting.
