After subscribing to the newsgroup
snews://secnews.netscape.com:563/netscape.mozilla.user.general
mozilla gets stuck in an infinite loop.

Actually, the problem obviously occurs when trying to retrieve articles -
When I kill and restart mozilla, the group is shown as subscribed, but
when I click on it, mozilla loops again.

The same happens with some other groups on the same server
(e.g. netscape.mozilla.user), but amazingly not with all of them
(netscape.mozilla.user.unix is OK).
There are no similar problems on other news servers.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
load the URL snews://secnews.netscape.com:563/netscape.mozilla.user.general

Actual Results:
infinite loop: UI not redrawn any more, no reaction to anything (except signals)
Severity: normal → critical
Keywords: hang
Summary: infinite loop after subscribing to newsgroup → hang after subscribing to newsgroup
worksforme with linux trunk build 20021109
do you see this with a clean profile?
The problem certainly is profile-related - but not in a very
straightforward way:

- when I delete all references about "secnews.netscape.com" from the
  profile, the problem persists

- when I delete all references about "secnews.netscape.com" plus
"XUL.mfasl" from the profile, the problem persists

- when I delete _only_ XUL.mfasl from the profile, I can access
  the newsgroup again.

- for a while, "secnews.netscape.com" was unreachable. Trying to access
the group "netscape.mozilla.user.general" still caused mozilla to
  hang

- with the same profile copied to another machine (which is behind a
NAT gateway), it was not possible to retrieve any articles from
secnews.netscape.com, but mozilla continued to function
- I forgot: yes, when I delete the whole profile and create a new one,
  the problem also disappears ...
Comment 2 suggests that this could be a dupe of bug 172547.

Please check bug 134576. This might be a dupe to a bug listed there. Is this
still happening anyway?

Blocks: FastLoadMeta
I personally worked around the problem (see above).

There obviously is a bug somewhere related to the XUL fastload,
but I guess, this one here should be closed, because for all
practical purposes, there is no reasonable way to reproduce it...
