Steps to reproduce:

Select address book, look in Mac OS X Address Book -- it is empty, even though the Contacts.app has lots of contacts. This is macOS Monterey (12.6) on Apple M1 Max hardware (a Mac Studio, 2022).

Note it works in Monterey on Intel hardware (a Mac Pro, late 2013).

Actual results:

The "Mac OS X Address Book" is empty, even though the macOS Contacts.app has lots of contacts.

In SystemPreferences/Security&Privacy/Contacts, Thunderbird never requested access to macOS Contacts, and there is no way to add it.

On my Intel Mac Pro, Thunderbird did request Contacts.

Note: on my Intel Mac Pro, several other apps requested Contacts (Terminal, MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint), but on the Mac Studio none of them did so. So it is possible this is a macOS problem.

Expected results:

The contacts in the macOS Contacts.app should be displayed and available for use in Thunderbird.

this is not limited to just new M1 hardware, per this bug it's TBird not supporting more recent OSX API:

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1739579

I have Thunderbird 115.5.0 running on a MacBook Pro M1 with macOS Sonoma 14.1.1. Thunderbird shows up under:

System Preferences >> Privacy & Security >> Contacts

With the checkbox enabled, Thunderbird can read all the contacts.

But I have Thunderbird BETA 121.0b1 running on another MacBook Pro Intel, also with macOS Sonoma 14.1.1. TB Beta doesn't show up as an application under the Preferences section mentioned above. The result is I can't enable it, and the BETA can't read my contacts.

I'm seeing this also on an M1 iMac where I had the issue in bug 1866098 and ended up deleting all prefs/related files and starting out with 120b7 from scratch. I was never asked for permission to access Address Book. I tried the directions at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1720257#c92 and it did not fix it.

And I do not have TBird listed in the System Settings Privacy-Security pref pane for access - running macos Ventura 13.6.1

Yes - this is probably a new, different bug, because the previous one (I think) only happened on old profiles, while I think this happens for anyone.

I posted it at, https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1864521
