Steps to reproduce:
Debian sid/unstable with thunderbird 1:102.6.0-1.
This is similar to bug 1743978, but I am unable to re-open it. This time, I configured Mozilla Thunderbird to only download the message headers though.
Actual results:
This happened again. For some reason, the message index was corrupted, and without informing the user, all message headers were downloaded again and indexed. Mozilla Thunderbird was lagging in that time, and the CPU fan of the laptop spun and full speed wearing out the hardware.

The next time this happens, what should a user do?
Expected results:
Indexing the message headers should not make the fan spin and not make Mozilla Thunderbird lag.

Indexing continued, and I attached with the GNU debugger, and attach the output of t a a bt.

And all my (unread) messages were marked as read. :(

Gloda does try to back off so there is no lag. Using CPU as much as it can while doing that is to be expected though.

In bug 1743978 you said the same about folder/profile being corrupted...
For some reason, the profile(?) got corrupted, and all message headers are downloaded again.
There are other reasons why message would be redownloaded. Are you just assuming there was corruption because the download happened? Or did you in fact see evidence of corruption, and if so please give the details.
Thunderbird is unusable, and messages cannot be navigated to at all or only slowly.
I think IO load would be as much a contributor as CPU to causing navigation issues. Assess the impact of indexing by putting Thunderbird into offline mode. That should force indexing to stop, and you should see indexing activity stop in the activity manager (and downloading, if there are still messages to be downloaded)

Indeed. In bug 1743978, Mozilla Thunderbird on the same system was configured to download the whole messages for offline reading though.

Right before this happened, there was an empty message in the message list with no data at all, just blank (From, Subject, …). That made me believe there was a corruption.

It’s an SSD, so not sure if IO on the client is a big problem. If it’s the same problem, bug 1743978 comment 3 showed time to be spent in pref_HashTableLookup.

How many messages in your largest folders?
Do some of them have many messages with the exact same subject? (from mailed log files for example)
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiling-thunderbird-performance if you can possibly get one, even if only on a smaller scale than the lockup.
To put a pin on the impact to SSD life, SSD are designed to last many years of heavy load. There is no risk of Thunderbird significantly shortening the life of an SSD.
