Steps to reproduce:
Try to send an email.
Actual results:
Frequently (perhaps about 10% of time), when sending a message the process stops with the Sending Message pop-up displayed. The pop-up says Sending Message ... and the blue progress bar goes the full width of the pop-up box, but no percentage complete is displayed. If I click on cancel and then send the message again the message is sent immediately with no problem.
Expected results:
Email should have been sent on the first attempt.

An update on this issue. I have found that if I wait long enough (about 5 minutes) the pop-up changes to a new pop-up with a Send Error Message. See the second attached file. I am using Windows 10 and the email service is hotmail.com.

The frequency of this error has increased. It now happens on about half the emails that I send.

I have now changed my antivirus from Avast to Bitdefender and this error no longer occurs.
