Steps to reproduce:

This is on Mac OS X 11.6.7 with Thunderbird connecting to a courier-imap 5.0.13+1.0.16-3build3 running on Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS

I'm finding that messages are intermittently lost (not permanently) as I interact with the UI. This is fairly frequently, and typically occurs when I've done a quick-search, selected all or most of the resulting messages, and drag/dropped them into a different imap folder. The source and/or destination folders are large (on the order of 100k's of messages) and the IMAP server is running on somewhat underpowered hardware. Possibly there are failed transactions or timed out responses involved.

Actual results:

The messages should have ended up in either the source or destination folder, rather than not displayed in either. Selecting "repair" folder will recover/show the messages, frequently still in the source folder. No errors are displayed or evident when this happens. During the folder repair, the repair process often hangs displaying "Downloading Message..." (I don't have the exact displayed text saved, sorry) in the status bar on the bottom of the window.

Expected results:

The messages should not be "lost" in Thunderbird's index of the IMAP folder(s). Each message should remain in the appropriate index until it is reliably known to be in the destination folder after a move.

By the way, repairing the folders is a very long slow process due to their size.

Sorry one last addition ... when the repair process hangs, I have to quit/restart Thunderbird to restart the download of message headers. It seems to hang more frequently if I've clicked on a subfolder as well as the main inbox, perhaps due to the interaction of the two download loops vs the IMAP server.

Summary: Thunderbird mfa loses track of messages and frequently has to be rebuilt → Thunderbird mfa loses track of messages and frequently has to be rebuilt and rebuild hangs

when the repair process hangs, I have to quit/restart Thunderbird

Clearly a bad idea.

And bulk moves in Thunderbird is a known problem area. Moving using Filters tends to have better results.

Exactly how many messages are in the source and target folders, and how many are you moving?
What is your hardware?

Component: Message Reader UI → Folder and Message Lists
Summary: Thunderbird mfa loses track of messages and frequently has to be rebuilt and rebuild hangs → Thunderbird loses track of messages and frequently has to be rebuilt and rebuild hangs

Does this also happen with version 115?
