Steps to reproduce:
I need the categories and hope Thunderbird will get the categories function per default asap. I have over 4000 contacts and with categories that was allways fine to work with. Now i must use the V91 because working with the 106 and the updated categorie manager is not practicable.
I manage the resubmission of customers with the categories. And 4000 contacts are need categories to organise it.
Please make it in future TB versions that via default the categories can managed.
Thanks in advance.

office(reporter), can you provide the link to the add-on which you're using?- Can you be more specific why the "updated categorie manager" isn't practicable?
- 106 isn't a TB version which we currently offer - do you mean 102 (release version)?
- Is your bug a duplicate of one of the bugs on this list?

Yes i mean at the moment TB 102 can not categories per default. And the updated addon can not provide a workflow that is practicable.
And i mean that categories should normal can be in the adressbook without any addons. I'd like to want to switch a contact to one or more categories and add unlimited categories in the adressbook.
About the Workflow:
In Thunderbird 91 the worklow is fine. I can edit or create a contact and can click directly in the edit mask the categories an. In TB 102 that is not able. Really an awful way. But the developer told that it not able in TB 102 so as in TB 91 because a adressbook integration ist not able with an Addon. If you try it out you see what i mean.
Hello, i read, that a new TB version is developed. If i can contribute somehow fot integrate categories with a good and fast workflow, please contact me.
Thanks in advance
Can anyone cofirm, if categories will be implemented in the further versions of Thunderbird?
My whole team use the TB 91 for their contacts (working in sales - we use TB as CRM) and would like to know if they can use the actual version in the future?
Additional Idea for programmer:
The best Workflow for categories are int TB 91 with the categorie addon
But also the Nextcloud Contact App have a good workflow for categories / called here "contact-groups"
I'm very very interested to get a actual TB (or the new version 115) with a good workflow - so if i can help you for testing or else - pls contact me!

I would like to support this request.
TB91 had a "Categories" tab in the "Edit Contact" popup of the Address Book. This is missing in newer versions.
The Category Manager (https://addons.thunderbird.net/de/thunderbird/addon/categorymanager/) improved the UI of that tab and added a category filter to the list. This improved substantially the usability of categories (without it, they were actually useless).
In newer TB versions, categories are not even shown anymore in the Address Book.
This feature is absolutely necessary for us, so we are stuck with TB91 (or have to consider CardBook which is supporting Categories, but has other disadvantages).
There is also a related issue on this in the Category Manager issue queue - it seems that the addon cannot provide the same functionality any more in TB >v91: https://github.com/jobisoft/CategoryManager/issues/93
I believe this is a duplicate of bug #364152 (which already duplicates other bugs with very similar title, e.g. bug #262530 "add categories into address book")
(In reply to Thomas D. (:thomas8) from comment #1)

I looked into this list and there are several very similar bugs which all deal with introducing tags/categories in one form or another (and probably need to be tackled together). For example, what's the difference between bug#364152 and bug#75711 (filed 5 years earlier) ? If none, maybe one should be closed as duplicate of the other ?

I'm not regular user of Bugzilla, but seeing that bug #364152 was opened 18 years ago and bug#75711 was opened 23 years ago, I'm not sure why they are still open and updated.
As mentioned in my comment before, categories for contacts were already introduced in Thunderbird address book - not sure when, but for many years until v91. And they were also useful for filtering addresses with the addon Category Manager.
This category feature was obviously dropped in recent TB versions and also made the addon Category Manager hardly usable.
I'm now using the CardBook addon which completely replaces the address book and provides Category filters for contacts.
But it would have been nice if Thunderbird address book kept that feature as well and the addon Category Manager could work as it was in the past.
