I have Nextcloud and Google calendars. Both allow me to choose per-event colours. It's a feature that has become integral in how I use calendars, and this use case seems to be widespread.
Currently, Thunderbird (am running Nightly, v109, on Fedora 37) shows all events from a single calendar under one single colour. Some users of multiple calendars prefer this; their preference can be maintained by having all events default to the calendar's identifying colour. (DAVx5 on Android even allows users to choose whether to sync event colours or not.)
Implementing event colours would enable Nextcloud and Google calendar users to see the same thing in Thunderbird that they see in the web clients, and would be a welcome addition to the Supernova redesign.
Do you mean like this?

While I've not so familiar with TB categories or tags, that does seem visually similar to what I mean, yes.
I posted on the TB subreddit earlier today, maybe that gives a good illustration of what I'm thinking: https://www.reddit.com/r/Thunderbird/comments/10f66cz/calendar_redesign_will_it_support_event_colours/
