For selecting display surfaces using gDM/guM under Wayland on we use the system level dialog provided by the xdg-desktop-portal ScreenCase API endpoint . On Ubuntu 22.04 that endpoint is missing from the standard installed xdg-desktop-portal, and is provided by xdg-desktop-portal-dev.

It should be provided by the DE specific portal packages such as xdg-desktop-portal-gnome - which should be preinstalled on a default installation (it initially wasn't, see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-meta/+bug/1956350).
So if this is still the case for some version of Ubuntu, it should be fixed on that side :)
