I have an identity configured for the email address "jik@extended-thunder.org". The "Reply from this identity when delivery headers match" option is enabled on that identity, with the value "*@extended-thunder.org" for that option.
When I receive an email message with "board@extended-thunder.org" in the To line, and I reply to it, Thunderbird puts "board@extended-thunder.org" in the From line of my reply, even though that's not one of my configured identities, and displays this warning at the bottom of the compose window: "A unique identity matching the From address was not found. The message will be sent using the current From field and settings from identity Jonathan Kamens <jik@extended-thunder.org>."
This behavior is definitely incorrect. It should put "jik@extended-thunder.org" in the From line, not "board@extended-thunder.org".
I believe this incorrect behavior is new.

Hey Jonathan, thanks for sharing! Well, what can I say? It's not a bug, it's a feature! But admittedly, there's no way you could fully tell from the label, and we don't have documentation yet. This is meant for email to your own domain, where you want to reply with whichever one of your addresses the sender used to write to you, without setting up a TB identity for each one - so it's supposed to be catch-all using the (owned-by-you) recipient address dynamically.
See my Bug 1806065 Comment 4.
