Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:109.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/109.0

Steps to reproduce:

untick setting "Show search suggestions in address bar results"

Actual results:

setting "Show search suggestions in Private Windows" (2 lines below "Show search suggestions in address bar results") is not greyed out, and when testing in private tabs, suggestions are not shown if ticked while "Show search suggestions in address bar results" is unticked

Expected results:

When setting "Show search suggestions in address bar results" is unticked, setting "Show search suggestions in Private Windows" 2 lines below should be greyed out, to convey to the user that changes in that setting would be irrelevant in that configuration

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Address Bar' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

When setting "Show search suggestions in address bar results" is unticked, setting "Show search suggestions in Private Windows" 2 lines below should be greyed out, to convey to the user that changes in that setting would be irrelevant in that configuration

The checkboxes are not nested because they are only partially related.
The user may have customized the legacy search bar on the toolbar, and the "Show search suggestions in Private Windows" option refers to both the urlbar and the legacy search bar, so it cannot be greyed out.

I'm resolving the bug as invalid, but I agree that the status of search preferences is confusing, and we have a proposal to clean them up that hopefully will solve this confusion.
