I retested https://translate.google.com/ in current Nightly with webfonts disabled (testing bug 1363454) and noticed that the swap_horiz icon is still expanded as text.

Looks like it uses the font Material Icons Extended which we need to add to the pref allowlist. If I manually add that to the pref, it fixes the issue for me.

https://timeline.google.com/ uses this Material Icons Extended font as well. So does https://news.google.com/ (for the downarrow in the search box).

(I also tested Google Calendar and Chromium's bug tracker, and those are fine with the already-existing pref value; they don't use this "Extended" version as far as I could see.)

https://contacts.google.com seems fine with the already-existing pref value, too. I think that covers all the sites that were recently discussed on bug 1521352.

Severity: -- → S3

Fix confirmed in Nightly 111.0a1 (2023-01-31) (64-bit) on Linux! Thanks!!!

One maybe-obvious-but-still-mentioning-it notice to passersby: to get it to work, you might have to adjust your adblocker settings:

  1. Un-blocking global fonts filtering (in uBlock Origin, Settings → Block remote fonts)
  2. Un-blocking domain-specific filters, e.g. fonts.gstatic.com
