Steps to reproduce:
Firefox updated to 109.0.1 and I can't find any book marks. When I follow instructions to restore bookmarks from backups the system can't find any backup bookmarks files.
Actual results:
- After the update I could find no bookmarks.
- I followed instructions to restore bookmarks, found various backups, but when I asked the system to restore bookmarks from the backup files it could not find the files even though it said I had 42 bookmarks.
Expected results:
- I should still have my bookmarks.
- When I tried to restore bookmarks the system should have found the backup file.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Bookmarks & History' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

Are you on Linux? It's possible the OS moved you from normal Firefox distribution to a flatpak/snap distribution, in that case it moved you to a new user profile, your data should still be intact in the old location (likely ~/.mozilla/firefox/) but you must import it into the new profile (You can import bookmarks from the Manage Bookmarks window)... or move back to using the non-snap version of Firefox.

(In reply to tcackerman from comment #4)
I am on Windows 10 and have been for a while.
I just noticed that I am also unable to add new bookmarks.
Could you please test if the problem persists in troubleshooting mode (see https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/diagnose-firefox-issues-using-troubleshoot-mode) ?
Also, please try right clicking on the Toolbar, pick Customize and then click on Restore Defaults. Does it help?

Noticed the message "THE BOOKMARKS AND HISTORY SYSTEM WILL NOT BE FUNCTIONAL. A FIREFOX FILE IS OPEN BY ANOTHER APPLICATION". I followed the instructions in the support article and was able to recover my bookmarks. Please close this item.
