Steps to reproduce:

At a time of the day you know a Daily update should be available:

  1. Check you are not notified of restart needed to update on hamburger menu
  2. Open about window
  3. Close and open about window again immediately

Actual results:

Step 2: TB says it is up-to-date
Step 3: TB download an update (the expected one ;) )

That happen every time in my case.

Expected results:

Tb should accurately check for updates

I didn't try to do that by Settings > General > Updates > Check for Updates

I've seen this. Intermittent, with no discernable pattern IMO. Sometime the second check is successful, sometimes not.

Eerily similar to Bug 1774341 - About Firefox update check needs to be used twice - but that bug report seems headed to being closed.

Status: UNCONFIRMED → NEW
Component: Backend → General
Ever confirmed: true
Product: MailNews Core → Thunderbird
Summary: Need two checks to be notifyed of available update → Need two checks of Help > About to be notified of available Thunderbird application update

Not clear if, and why, there would be a connection to Supernova

I thought the new update process & backend will be released with Supernova. Am I wrong !? (sorry)

We're only putting [Supernova] for the major front-end re-work. There are many other unrelated changes going into the actual release.

Maybe related to the recent Updater overhaul in bug 1797585 ?

Seems to me that checking for updates though Settings > General > Updates works as expected (one click only). I experienced it for the last 2 updates (ending with TB 113a1 build 20230321105728). While going through About window needs two checks.

I haven't seen this, i.e. the need to check twice via About, on Daily for a while now.

Nicolas, are you still seeing it? On Daily, that is?

Yes, I always see this, though About window & Settings, but the frequency seems (sometimes) lower. I even experienced once with Firefox Nightly.

Can I do something to help hunt that bug ?

I thought you mentioned before that it worked for Settings, just not for About, so has that now changed?

I saw this regularly earlier, but haven't seen it once, for quite some time now.

I checked a bit further every day this month, and found both UI, Settings & About, have the same bug.

Hypothesis :
ATM, it seems it might happen more often with localized version, even if it happens with EN-US version too.
To me, it seems the version check at startup works with EN-US version, while I need to click once or twice with FR-fr.

I'm using the en-GB build, and no longer seeing it, so it's not quite that simple, perhaps.

You say "at startup"; I'm talking about a manual check…?

I'll try to make it more clear.
By "at startup" I mean :

  1. About window : Start TB, then, open, close, reopen... the About window ;
  2. Settings : Start TB with the Settings tab (as of STR on comment #0). If that don't find an update, even if there is one, I manually check with the button. For that then, I need to click one or two times to get the update downloading.

Nicolas, does this still reproduce for you?

This may be related to what I observed on Mac version, on the evening of Dec. 23, 2023:

I was running Tbird 115.5.2 up until that night.

I manually updated to Tbird 115.6.0.

All good.

The problem is that Tbird didn't tell me that 115.6.0 was available... there was no notification. I just happened to check the version in "About Thunderbird".

My settings were selected for "Check for updates, but let me choose whether to install them".

Tbird didn't notify me there was an update, even though to my knowledge this security update came out on Dec. 19th.

I just noticed that Tbird 115.6.0 did not notify me that 115.6.1 was available.

My settings were selected for "Check for updates, but let me choose whether to install them".

I can confirm that this is happening on both Windows and Mac version 115.8.0 when auto-update is not selected. There is no pop-up notification that the new version, 115.9.0, is available.

Should I open a new bug report?

Using this bug report is fine

FYI...

I just noticed that Tbird 115.6.0 did not notify me that 115.6.1 was available.

My settings were selected for "Check for updates, but let me choose whether to install them".

It is certainly possible for an update to be available but you don't get a notification. The update rate for 115.6.1 was originally 40, and didn't get increased to 100 until 12:32pm eastern time on 2024-01-10. However that was approx. 60 hours before your posting, so you should have been notified.

And the rate was set at 100 on the 19th.

Thanks, Wayne. Although I don't understand what you mean by "update rate," it seems you are saying that in both cases, Thunderbird should have given me a pop-up notification well before I found out about the updates and manually updated.

I'm still on daily version 126.0a1 (2024-04-07) 32bits.

I check for updates every day, it still says it's up to date.

I suspect you are not seeing what is described in this bug report, but that daily updates are currently disabled since April 10.
