To archive mail, I move messages to a subfolder and remove that subfolder disk
file from the mail folder (on the disk). I noticed that my backups were not
getting smaller, however, and discovered that all the moved messages were still
in the original text file, apparently tagged as invisible.

you have to compact the source folder to reclaim the space, because we're using
the standard berkeley mailbox format to store mail, and that format requires
compaction to reclaim space. You can set up mozilla to automatically compact
folders when a certain amount of space will be reclaimed, edit | preferences
|offline and disk space.
